Valentine Texas Dive Bar is a West Texas roadtrip destination; a must experience!
A friend and I were passing through Valentine — population roughly 75 — when we spotted this intriguing little bar and knew we had to check it out. At first glance, you might expect a typical dive bar: dim lights, rowdy locals, maybe the occasional flying beer bottle. But that’s not what this place is at all. It’s run by a co-op of creative artists and serves as a haven where anyone can belong — a place that feels almost too genuine, too human, to be real. I spoke with owner, Jeff Wilson—he graciously agreed to answer this series of questions. Hopefully in turn, this article helps raise awareness about this treasure in a tiny town—that if you blink, you will miss it.
1. “Being in such a remote spot, how do most people end up finding their way to your bar — locals, road-trippers, or word of mouth?”
Most folks just wander in. It’s a great mix of people you wouldn’t find in any ordinary bar. Just yesterday, we had a Harvard Medical School physician, a photographer from France, and a local rancher who runs a 90,000-acre spread — all sitting at the bar at the same time. Some have heard about us before, but most just see the sign and decide to stop. There’s not another business for 35 miles in either direction, so that narrows down the options a bit.
2. “What do guests usually tell you after they’ve experienced this place? Have there been any reactions or stories that surprised you?”
“Experience” is the right word, because people often come in just looking for a beer and end up staying six hours, talking with us and whoever else wanders in. The most surprising thing — though it’s starting to happen more often — is how many people want to work here. A few have even lived behind the bar in trailer homes after stumbling upon the place. Two of those folks now have homes here in Valentine. In a way, we’ve become a little like Ellis Island — welcoming people from the outside world and helping them put down roots here.
3. “Looking ahead, do you see the bar staying just as it is, or are there plans for new twists — like merch, events, or changes to the space?”
We’re really excited about the future of Valentine and would love to host more events around town, in addition to our annual Valentines in Valentine festival. Some folks have even suggested we combine goat roping with a washer tournament — we’ll see how that goes! As for merch, it’s available online, and we’re happy to mail it anywhere in the world.
