Road Trip Savings Tips (Without Missing the Fun)

A road trip doesn’t have to drain your wallet. I feel like a hypocrite for these next sentences, as I don't do much planning. Photography road trips are spontaneous, but everyone travels differently. With a little planning — and a mindset for adventure — you can stretch your budget and still get the full experience of the open road. Here are some of my go-to tips:

1. Bring your own cooler.

If you’re flying and renting a car, grab a styrofoam cooler, bottled water, and some granola bars. If you’re driving from home, pack a cooler the same way. This simple trick saves you from paying for every single breakfast or snack on the road. Of course, if you’ve got a favorite breakfast spot along the way, by all means stop in — it’s all about balance. Combos are also a favorite road snack for my exploring buddy, Jerry Winnett and I.

2. Eat like a local.

Skip the chains and look for locally owned restaurants. These places need your business, and your dollars stay in the community. Plus, you’ll meet local people and discover regional favorites you’d never find at a big box place.

3. Sleep local, too.

Forget the spa experience — you’re on a road trip, not a resort getaway. Choosing a locally owned motel or inn makes for a more authentic travel experience, often with a little extra character thrown in.

4. Track your fuel costs.

Download GasBuddy to find cheaper gas and plan ahead when stations get scarce (and expensive). A little research here can add up to big savings over the miles.

5. Be choosy with attractions.

I’ll admit it: I don’t plan much — I prefer to be spontaneous. Some of my favorite memories come from pulling over for a random photo stop, browsing a local shop, or stumbling onto something I didn’t even know existed. That said, if you’re into attractions, a little research goes a long way. Paid stops add up quickly, so pick your must-sees and skip the rest.

6. Consider camping (if it’s your thing).

Camping isn’t really my jam. But if it’s yours, it’s one of the most cost-effective options for overnight stays.

In the end, road trips are about freedom and discovery. Save where you can so you can splurge where it matters most — on the people, the places, and the experiences that make the journey unforgettable.
